Last Year in South Sudan

Posted by on May 16, 2012

This time last year I was in South Sudan.

It was hot.  There were enormous scorpions and the view of the stars without the hindrance of city lights was astounding.

I had known about the decades of war, the crushing poverty, the overwhelming need of this country for years, but I had to see for myself. I wanted to look into the faces of the people and hear their stories, see what life was like for them.women of Mapel, South Sudan

It was an experience I cannot find the right words to describe. There were stark contrasts, like a baby being born on the cement floor of a clinic and hours later and only a few feet away, a 15 yr. old boy dying from a disease that could’ve been treated if they’d lived here.

There is so much need.

The women are amazing. They are incredible, carrying loads of wood atop their heads with babies on their backs. Even with the glaring differences in our daily activities and the miles between us, I felt the connection of womanhood, motherhood, the desire to make life happy for our children. These were my sisters. We have had very different experiences because of the worlds into which we arrived, but sisters just the same. Created by the same God, loved with the same intensity.

I want them to know Him. I want them to know how much He loves them and desires good things for them. I want them to have clean water to drink and to give their children. I want them to not have to worry that their babies will die from diarrhea. I want their country to have peace. I believe God wants these things as well.

I hope you will ask God how you can take a step and start the Sister Effect. What a privilege it is to be part of doing some good and bringing the Peace of Jesus to our sisters around the globe!

Much Love ~ lizi
